Crossings (Querverkehre)

To cross the Kiel Canal, we (Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt – WSA Kiel and Brunsbüttel) provide two tunnel facilities in Rendsburg, four bridges (the Rendsburg High Bridge, Grünental Railway Bridge, Rendsburg Railway Bridge and Levensau High Bridge), and 12 ferries.

[The high bridges in Brunsbüttel (B5), Hohenhörn (A23), Rade (A7) in Kiel-Holtenau (B503), and the Levensau Federal Highway Bridge are maintained and operated by the Schleswig-Holstein State Office for Road Construction.]

The free ferries, the transporter bridge, and a passenger ferry enable people, cyclists, and vehicles weighing up to 38 tons to cross the canal safely. A further passenger ferry connects the banks at Kiel-Holtenau.

A special feature in Rendsburg is the transporter bridge, which operates for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles up to 3.5 tons at 15-minute intervals beneath the Rendsburg High Bridge between Rendsburg and Osterrönfeld. The free ferries operate daily on demand. The transporter bridge follows a scheduled summer and winter timetable.

Shipping traffic on the Kiel Canal has priority, so delays for vehicles may occur.

Every year, about 6 million motor vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists use the crossings over the Kiel Canal.

The Rendsburg Road Tunnel is used by about 13 million vehicles annually on Federal Highway B77.

About 1.1 million users are counted annually in the pedestrian tunnel.
