The entire North Sea-Baltic Sea Canal was electrically illuminated on both sides right from the opening.
Wooden lamp posts stood on both sides of its banks at intervals of 250 meters.
The „canal lighting“ was supplied with 7.500 volts of alternating current from four points. The lamps, each operated with 25 volts, were connected in series. Resistors were fitted above the lamps to prevent all the lamps from going out at the same time in the event of a fault.
