As the Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV), we ensure the continuous maintenance of the Kiel Canal and provide a safe and reliable transport route in the long term.
According to forecasts, transport volumes are expected to increase and ever larger ships are expected to be used on the Kiel Canal.
In addition, some important structures have been in operation for more than 100 years and are now in need of repair.
In order to ensure that the canal remains capable of handling international shipping in the future, extensive expansion and repair measures are underway or in the planning stage.
Important Investment Measures on the Kiel Canal East Section
Between the switch Königsförde and the inland port Kiel-Holtenau, a widening of the canal and the flattening of narrow curves are planned.
Entire Kiel Canal
The Kiel Canal is to be deepened by about 1 meter along its full length of nearly 100 kilometers, and the curves and switches are to be optimized.
Lock Facility Kiel
After more than 100 years of operation, the lock facility Kiel, consisting of the small and large lock, must be renovated.
Lock Facility Brunsbüttel
In the first step, the construction of a fifth lock chamber will take place. Subsequently, the existing large lock chambers can be renovated one after the other.
First Levensauer High Bridge
The first Levensauer High Bridge will be replaced due to its old age. The canal widening will be taken into account.
Road Tunnel Rendsburg
The road tunnel Rendsburg will be fundamentally renovated and state-of-the-art technology will be installed to make the canal tunnel safer for all road users
